Biography

Krystian graduated from Wroclaw University of Technology (Poland) in 2006 with a MSc (mgr inz.) degree in Electronics and Telecommunication and from Heriot-Watt University (UK) in 2011 with a PhD degree in Physics. His PhD research project involved CO2 laser micro-machining of optical glasses (fused silica, borosilicate and lead-silicate glasses) and the investigation of new applications for CO2 laser polishing. He collaborated closely with PowerPhotonic (UK) during this research period. In May 2011, Krystian joined the High Power Laser Applications group at Heriot-Watt University as a Research Associate.

 

Research interests

Krystian's research is focused on the investigation and development of laser-based processes for precision manufacturing. This includes CO2 laser polishing and ultrashort-pulsed laser micromachining of optical glass substrates, high-speed laser cutting and drilling of thin flex glass, laser texturing and marking of metals (in particular the manufacture of ‘hard-to-replicate’ security markings) as well as the use of adaptive optics (such as piezoelectric deformable mirrors, spatial light modulators and digital micro-mirror devices) for laser machining applications. Krystian has collaborated with a large number of external research partners, including Renishaw, M-Solv, PowerPhotonic, SPI Lasers, SISMA, Atlas Elektronik, University of the West of Scotland (UWS), United Kingdom Astronomy Technology Centre (UK ATC) and Cranfield University.

 

Roles & Responsibilities

Krystian is a Research Associate within the High Power Laser Applications group, which is a part of the Applied Optics and Photonics group, at Heriot Watt University. Also he is a researcher of the EPSRC Centre for Innovative Manufacturing in Laser-based Production Processes since September 2013.
